As as example of what's possible with 3D printing, I set out to make something incredible.

As as example of what's possible with 3D printing, I set out to make something incredible.

In September my father suggested we go to Comicon, but I didn't have a costume! So I made one myself. The process started out with taking the 3D files of the armor, and sizing it to my own body. For this I used a program called Armorsmith, which shows you a virtual avatar of yourself. So I put in my measurements, and imported the armor files. Then I sized all of them to my avatar. For the sections with multiple pieces, such as the helmet and chestplate, I first had to join the pieces in Meshmixer before putting them into Armorsmith. After sizing, Id put them back into Meshmixer where Id seperate and export each individual piece.

Now I have all the files sized, but they're still not ready for 3D printing. I had to manually orient and ensure that over 30 pieces had proper supports and print settings. Some pieces didn't print properly, so it took a lot of fine tuning to get it all right. After printing all the pieces, we could start the next step.

Sanding, and this was the worst one by far. 3D printed objects have layer lines due to how they're made, and in order to no oversand and damage the piece, its necessary to use several different grits of sandpaper on every single piece to hide layer lines, seams, and prepare the surface for spray paint.

But painting was fun! I used masking tape to section off parts for all the yellow lines. And after applying the colored paint and the clear coat, the pieces were done.

However there was no way of wearing the armor, and I was still missing some important elements. So the rest of the time I had before Comicon was spent learning how to sew to make the cape, and applying the padding and straps to all the parts so I could actually wear them.

And now I'm done! And Comicon was a lot of fun, with many people recognizing who I was cosplaying and asking to take pictures. After that, I used the cosplay to attend childrens day events, and the kids loved it.

I hope this inspires you to dream and act big.
